The Medifast program is a very low-calorie, no-brainer approach to weight loss. There's no counting calories, fat grams, or carbs; you just eat or drink six times a day.

Launched 27 years ago as a meal replacement program available only through doctors, the Medifast diet is now widely available and includes 70 meal-replacement options, including the popular shakes.

The primary Medifast weight loss program, "5 plus 1," calls for five daily Medifast meal-replacement drinks or foods (all available only through the company) plus one "lean and green" meal, consisting of lean meat or fish plus salad or green vegetables.

The high-protein, low-carb Medifast plans allow dieters approximately 800-1,000 calories a day, designed to yield a loss of 2 to 5 pounds per week while preserving muscle mass.

"Weight loss varies according to stage of the program, how much you have to lose and physical activity," explains Lisa Davis, PhD, Medifast vice president of research and development. "Initial weight loss is usually much greater than amount lost in later weeks."

Special Medifast plans are available for vegetarians, teens, new moms, seniors, people who have recently had weight loss surgery, and gout sufferers.

Davis estimates the cost of the meal replacements at $80/week or $300/month, not including the daily "lean and green" meal you prepare yourself. No supplements are needed with the Medifast diet, she says.

The meal-replacement products and support are available online through Medifast's web site; in about 15,000 doctor's offices across the United States; at Medifast clinics in Florida and Texas; and through the "Take Shape for Life" network of health coaches (Take Shape for Life is a subsidiary of Medifast).

An array of support services and educational material -- including exercise guides, nutrition information, online communities, personal trainers, and registered dietitians -- are available online, in person, or over the telephone to help dieters following the plan.

Medifast Diet Plan: What You Can Eat

The beauty of the Medifast program is the limited decision making. You choose five daily meal replacements from an assortment of portion-controlled shakes, puddings, eggs, oatmeal, chili, bars, or soups, plus prepare one "lean and green meal." Soy or whey protein are the basis for the meal replacements, which are designed to help dieters feel satisfied on the very low-calorie plan.

Dieters are allowed 5-7 daily ounces of lean meat or fish. The meal options are broken down into "lean," "leaner" and "leanest." If you choose leaner options, additional healthy fats are allowed. The lean meats and fish may be grilled, baked, boiled, broiled, or poached.

Tiptronic Electro-hydraulically controlled 4 speed transmission was as an option for the first time, giving the combination of manual and automatic gear selection being supplemented by immediate up or down gear selection by 'tipping' the gear lever forward or backwards.

Compared to earlier versions the 964 also gained from chassis development and improvements in tyre technology, resulting in far more user friendly driving characteristics on the limit, whilst still retaining enough quirkiness of a rear engine design to satisfy and reward enthusiastic drivers.

The introduction of an anti-lock dual assisted braking system, progressive power steering, 3-way catalytic converter and a ten-year anti-corrosion warranty completed the new package.

When I started my recent attempt to lose 20 pounds in a month, I stripped down my Medifast order to consist only of shakes and crunch bars. When I’m at home, I mix up the weight loss shakes in my Rocket Blender (which is still going strong) with a little ice, but if I’m on the road I pack a few crunch bars. I love the bars, but in my opinion, the weight loss shakes are really the quickest and easiest path to quick weight loss. Medifast has done an amazing job of rounding out the diet with a wide variety of food options, but the shakes are definitely what have worked best for me.

I’ve tried just about every type of Medifast food, but when it comes to the taste and to the level of “fullness” they provide, the Medifast shakes beat out all the rest. I stick to Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla, Orange and Banana. A lot of people complain about the shakes getting boring after awhile, but I honestly love starting my day off with one. If you’re getting sick of them, I highly recommend you ditch the shaker cup and blend them with some ice. They taste a lot better, have a more pleasant texture and seem to be more filling.

During my many years of attempting to lose weight through various methods, I’ve actually tried a lot of weight loss shakes: SlimFast, Special K, MuscleMilk and a bunch of other brands I can’t remember. The Medifast shakes are the only one that left me feeling full, content and like my blood sugar levels weren’t spiking all over the place.

If you take a look at the nutritional profiles of the Medifast shakes, you’ll find that they are very nicely balanced when it comes to nutrition. In addition to only containing 90 calories, each shake clocks in with very low sugars and carbohydrates.

This is my 4th day of staying 100% on program. It’s actually been really easy and I am feeling great today. Recently I’ve started so simplify all areas of my life, and even though Medifast is pretty simple to begin with, reducing some of my options has taken some of the thinking out of it. With a 1GHz Celeron processor and just 2GB RAM, this isn’t the kind of laptop that will set pulses racing. Its price and weight are two low figures that are more attractive, though. After using it for a while, we found ourselves growing to like it despite its shortcomings.

With an 11.6in screen, the U160 is about the size of a netbook, and at 1.4kg it's just as light. It doesn't have the low screen resolution of most netbooks, though; 1,366x768 is the same resolution as most 15in laptops, and it gives plenty of space for office documents and busy web pages. It's also ideal for watching HD video. The screen’s 16:9 aspect ratio reduces the size of the black bars above and below widescreen video that appear on netbooks’ 1024x600-pixel screens.

Squeezing such a high resolution into a small space means that each pixel is smaller, making images pin-sharp, although it also makes text quite small. Colour accuracy isn't spectacular: the LED backlight is slightly uneven and the glossy finish and tight viewing angles mean we had to adjust the screen's tilt carefully or else contrast was ruined. Once we’d done so, colours were quite vibrant and accurate.

The dual-core Celeron U3400 processor is based on the Intel Core design but it runs at a slower 1GHz – hence the lower benchmark scores compared to Core i3 chips. However, its overall score of 36 is almost twice the performance of a netbook. Its best result was 46 in our image-editing test, which doesn’t benefit from multiple processors. That’s true of most office and entertainment software, too – given a single task to handle, the U160 should be able to keep up. The integrated graphics chipset can decode HD video but it's not powerful enough to run demanding 3D games.

Visually, the U160 is stunning. Its dark brown case sandwiches a white interior, and the lid has a smart etched pattern. Opening the lid reveals a white keyboard panel and a glossy black bezel surrounding the screen. The keys are an odd shape but their slightly concave surfaces make them comfortable to type on, while their crisp, light action gives plenty of feedback for touch-typists.

Other than placing the Fn key in the bottom left corner where the Ctrl key should be, Lenovo has stuck to a fairly standard layout, including a double-height Enter key. Below is a small but responsive touchpad, with two separate, light-action buttons. There's a small, fiddly switch to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth, and a standard complement of expansion ports. One welcome exception is the inclusion of a shared eSATA/USB port, which is useful for adding a fast eSATA external drive.

It may not be screamingly fast or packed with the latest features, but the U160 is light, lasts for over six hours per charge and costs little more than most netbooks. The 11.6in screen may be a bit cramped for some people, and those using demanding applications such as photo or video editing will be frustrated by its basic performance, but for web browsing on the move it's a great little laptop. It’s worth considering the pricier Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 for its superior performance and battery life, though.

Since its 2010 debut, Lenovo's ThinkPad Edge series has provided small businesses with an affordable option that combines legendary ThinkPad quality with updated looks. With the introduction of the 12.5-inch ThinkPad Edge E220s ($869 as configured), Lenovo has turned the style volume up to 11 with a sexy, soft-plastic body and chrome accents. But does this luscious laptop perform as well as it looks?

Design

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E220s is the new-look Jaguar of small business notebooks, offering a sporty reinterpretation of a classic aesthetic. While the Edge E220s's dark color, ThinkPad logo, and red trackpoint all whisper "ThinkPad," its rubberized chassis and chrome bumpers scream "jet set." We particularly like the Edge E220's color, which appears black in dark light, but is actually a very dark pool-table green when viewed in bright light. A red light sits above the letter "I" in "ThinkPad" and blinks when the system is in sleep mode, while the clean, smooth bottom makes the Edge E220s look almost as attractive when it's upside-down. The edge-to-edge "infinity glass" that covers the screen adds another high-end design element to the mix. The Edge E220's only design downside is that its surfaces pick up fingerprints far too easily.

At a mere 12.3 x 8.4 x 0.85 inches and 3.2 pounds, the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E220s is one of the thinnest and lightest business laptops on the market, even thinner than the ThinkPad X220 (1.25 inches thick) and just a little thicker than the Toshiba Portege R835 and the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 (both 0.7 inches thick).

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style, spill-resistant keyboard on the ThinkPad Edge E220s has three important things going for it: powerful tactile feedback, curved keys that help you avoid errant strokes, and a comfortable, soft palm rest. Thanks to these ingredients, we achieved a strong score of 86 words per minute on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, better than our typical 80 wpm score.

Like all ThinkPads, the Edge E220s has a bright red TrackPoint pointing stick in between its G and H keys. The stick provides the most accurate navigation of any built-in notebook pointing device.

For those who don't like pointing sticks, the 2.9 x 1.9-inch touchpad on the Edge E220s provides smooth, precise navigation around the desktop. Better still, multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom are smooth. Rather than offering discrete buttons, the left and right buttons are built into the pad itself. Though we've complained about the inaccuracy of so-called "clickpads" in the past, the left and right buttons on the E220's pad were quite precise and did not cause the cursor to jump when clicked.

Heat

The ThinkPad Edge E220s stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming video at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured the touchpad at a frigid 82 degrees, the keyboard at a cool 89 degrees, and the bottom at a reasonable 96 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures above 95 degrees uncomfortable for the top surfaces of a notebook, and 100 degrees on the underside to be too high.

Display and Audio

Whether we were streaming a 720p episode of Fringe from Fox.com or playing a 1080p QuickTime trailer of Priest, the 12.5-inch, 1366 x 768 glossy screen provided sharp, bright images, though colors seemed a bit dull. Unfortunately, the 200-nit screen and its "infinity glass" coating are so reflective that left and right viewing angles are poor. With a light source behind us and the screen at full brightness, video washed out significantly at angles even less than 45 degrees.

Lenovo uses Dolby Home Theater v4 technology to boost the ThinkPad Edge E220s's audio performance, but even with Dolby software enabled and set to the music listening profile, sound was quite tinny on the built-in speakers. Whether we were listening to a jazz standard such as Kool and the Gang's "Summer Madness," Motley Crue's "Too Young to Fall in Love," or Sade's "Smooth Operator," percussion sounds were distorted and unpleasant. Disabling the Dolby software made the music sound completely flat and dropped its volume to nearly inaudible levels.
